Mumbai lacks good homes

Posted on December 14, 2011

A recent study shows Mumbai isn’t a good “home” for many inhabitants. The financial capital that houses large corporate houses and industries is incapable of providing housing for its inhabitants. Though another survey brought Mumbai in the top 5 happy cities in India to live in, this survey lashes out at Mumbai by ranking it at number 6 out of 8 cities in India.

Mumbai, one of the world’s known trade centers contributing 25 per cent of industrial output and 70 per cent of capital transactions to India's economy was ranked worst as far as housing facilities were concerned. The survey reveals it is nearly impossible to get a decent, affordable housing for Mumbaikars within city limits.

It is shocking that Mumbai, a mega city that houses 1 percent of the total population in India because of the concentration of corporate bodies in the city, is poor in housing. The survey was conducted in six parameters - housing, hospitals, schools, colleges, work culture and job opportunities - that comprised the Social Infrastructure, out of which housing gathered the least points. Affordability of decent accommodation is the major worry for the city residents. Realty and rental rates are soaring at unreal heights.

Delhi, Ahmedabad, Bangalore and Chennai moved ahead of Mumbai in this front. Ironically Mumbai continues to top in work culture.
